What is financial statement compilation?

A financial statement compilation is an engagement in which an accountant presents your financial information in the format of formal financial statements, accompanied by an accountant's compilation report, without providing assurance or an audit opinion. It is the level of service most banks, landlords, bonding companies and private investors ask for when they want statements more credible than a QuickBooks printout but do not require a full audit. Kingsley Accounting Group prepares compilations to AICPA SSARS standards, typically within five to ten business days once the underlying records are complete.

Sound familiar?

These are the situations that bring people to this service most often.

Your bank asked for "financial statements" and a QuickBooks export got rejected.
A landlord or bonding agent needs statements with an accountant's report attached.
You have investors or a board who need consistent, comparable numbers each quarter.
Your internal statements do not tie out and you are not sure where they break.

What’s included

Every engagement covers the following as standard. Nothing here is an upsell.

  • Compiled P&L, balance sheet, cash flow statement and statement of changes in equity
  • Formal accountant’s compilation report on firm letterhead, signed
  • Notes to the financial statements where the engagement calls for them
  • Prior-period comparatives so reviewers can see the trend, not just a snapshot
  • Reconciliation of your records to the statements before anything is issued
  • Adjusting journal entries documented and pushed back into your accounting file
  • Quarterly or annual cadence depending on what your lender or board requires
  • Direct communication with your lender if they have follow-up questions

How it works

Scope the requirement

We read the actual request from your bank, landlord or investor. Compilation, review and audit are different engagements at different costs: most people are asked for the cheapest one.

Reconcile and adjust

We tie your records to source documents, post the adjusting entries that are needed, and tell you what changed and why.

Issue and support

You receive the signed statements as a PDF package. If the reviewer comes back with questions, we answer them directly.

What you receive

Signed statement package

Complete PDF with accountant’s report, ready to forward.

Adjusting entry schedule

Every adjustment listed, explained, and posted back to your books.

Comparative presentation

Current and prior period side by side, formatted the way reviewers expect.

Frequently asked questions

A compilation presents your numbers in financial statement format with no assurance. A review applies analytical procedures and inquiry, and provides limited assurance. An audit tests underlying evidence and provides an opinion. Cost rises steeply across those three. Most small business lenders ask only for a compilation, always check the exact wording before paying for more.

Five to ten business days once your underlying records are complete and reconciled. If the books need clean-up first, that work is quoted separately and adds to the timeline.

Yes. We regularly compile from records maintained by an in-house bookkeeper or another firm. We will tell you if we find issues that need correcting before the statements can be issued.

Not necessarily. Compilations can be prepared under GAAP or under a special purpose framework such as cash or tax basis, which is often cheaper and perfectly acceptable. We confirm which basis your lender will accept before we begin.
