What is tax planning & strategy?

Tax planning is the year-round process of structuring transactions, timing and entity choices to legally reduce your total tax liability, as distinct from tax preparation, which reports decisions already made. The meaningful levers include entity structure and S corporation elections, retirement plan selection, income and expense timing, fixed asset and Section 179 planning, Qualified Business Income optimization, and owner compensation strategy. Kingsley Accounting Group runs a mid-year and a Q4 planning review for every planning client, because after December 31 almost nothing can still be changed.

Sound familiar?

These are the situations that bring people to this service most often.

You find out what you owe in March, when nothing can be done about it.
You have heard S corp elections save money but nobody has run your numbers.
You bought equipment in January that would have been worth far more in December.
Your retirement contributions are whatever the payroll default happened to be.

What’s included

Every engagement covers the following as standard. Nothing here is an upsell.

  • Entity structure analysis: LLC, S corp or C corp, with the actual break-even math
  • S corporation election modeling including reasonable compensation scenarios
  • Retirement plan selection: SEP, SIMPLE, solo 401(k) or defined benefit
  • Income and expense timing across year end to land in the better bracket
  • Section 179 and bonus depreciation planning before you buy, not after
  • Qualified Business Income (199A) optimization including threshold management
  • Multi-year projections so this year’s saving does not cost you more next year
  • A written plan with each strategy, the projected saving, and what you must do

How it works

Mid-year review

Around July we project the full year, identify what is trending, and flag the decisions that need making while there is still time.

Model the options

Each strategy is modeled against your actual numbers with the projected saving quantified. No generic advice, no rules of thumb.

Q4 execution

A second review before year end to confirm what to execute and by when: purchases, contributions, distributions, elections.

What you receive

Written tax plan

Each strategy, the projected saving, and the deadline it must happen by.

Scenario comparison

Side-by-side modeling so the trade-offs are visible, not asserted.

Action checklist

What you need to do, in what order, before December 31.

Frequently asked questions

The commonly cited threshold is around $50,000 to $80,000 of net profit above a reasonable salary, but the real answer depends on your salary requirement, payroll costs, state exposure and benefit structure. We model it against your actual numbers rather than applying a rule of thumb, and sometimes the answer is that it is not yet worth it.

Form 2553 must generally be filed within two months and fifteen days of the beginning of the tax year the election is to take effect: March 15, 2026 for a calendar-year 2026 election. Late election relief is available under Revenue Procedure 2013-30 in many cases, but it is far easier to file on time.

It varies enormously with your situation. For profitable owner-operated businesses, coordinated entity, compensation and retirement planning commonly moves the annual number by five figures. We quantify the projected saving in writing before you decide whether the engagement is worth it.

Most levers close on December 31. A few, such as SEP-IRA contributions, certain retirement plan funding, and some elections, extend into the following year. If you are reading this in November, there is still time. If you are reading it in February, we are planning for next year.
