What is nonprofit & charity returns?

Nonprofit tax returns are filed on Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-N depending on the organization's gross receipts and total assets, and are due by the 15th day of the fifth month after year end: May 15 for calendar-year organizations. Unlike business returns, Form 990 is a public document that donors, grantmakers and charity raters actively read. Failing to file for three consecutive years results in automatic revocation of exempt status. Kingsley Accounting Group prepares 990 filings, maintains fund accounting, and handles Florida charitable solicitation registration.

Sound familiar?

These are the situations that bring people to this service most often.

You are not certain which version of Form 990 your organization must file.
Your functional expense allocation has never been documented or tested.
Board members ask for financial reports you cannot easily produce.
A grant application asked for audited or reviewed statements and you have neither.

What’s included

Every engagement covers the following as standard. Nothing here is an upsell.

  • Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-N preparation based on your actual filing threshold
  • Schedule A public support test calculation and monitoring across five years
  • Functional expense allocation: program, management and fundraising, defensibly
  • Form 990-T where unrelated business income tax applies
  • Florida charitable solicitation registration and annual renewal
  • Fund and grant accounting with restricted and unrestricted tracking
  • Board-ready financial reporting in a format non-accountants can read
  • Exempt status protection review: the activities that put it at risk

How it works

Confirm your obligations

We establish which form applies, your public support position, and whether any unrelated business income exists.

Prepare and present

We prepare the return and the supporting schedules, then walk the board through what the 990 says about the organization, because people will read it.

Maintain through the year

Fund accounting, restricted grant tracking and board reporting kept current, so next year is a filing rather than a reconstruction.

What you receive

Filed 990 package

The return, schedules and a plain-English summary for the board.

Public support tracking

Your five-year position, updated annually, before it becomes a problem.

Board reporting pack

Statements formatted for people who do not read financial statements.

Frequently asked questions

Organizations with gross receipts normally under $50,000 may file Form 990-N, a short electronic postcard. Those with gross receipts under $200,000 and total assets under $500,000 may file Form 990-EZ. Everyone above those thresholds files the full Form 990. Private foundations file Form 990-PF regardless of size.

Late filing penalties accrue daily based on organization size. More seriously, failing to file for three consecutive years triggers automatic revocation of exempt status, with no notice required. Reinstatement is possible but costly and slow. If you have missed filings, address them now rather than at year end.

Form 990 is a public document that donors, grantmakers and charity evaluators read closely. Functional expense ratios and governance answers directly affect fundraising. A poorly prepared 990 costs far more in lost donations than the preparation fee saved.

Yes. Florida requires most charitable organizations soliciting contributions in the state to register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and renew annually. Certain religious organizations and small charities are exempt, but the exemption is narrower than most assume.
